TEAM BOYNE Captures Annual Harbor Cup Over Team Harbor

Area PGA professionals compete and raise dollars for local charities.

Harbor Springs, Mich. – For the fifth year in a row, Team BOYNE holds on to the Harbor Cup edging out Team Harbor in the annual Harbor Cup matches 13-11. The event was played this week October 3-4 on The Heather Course at The Highlands at Harbor Springs.

The annual fall event has PGA professionals from BOYNE Golf’s properties competing against PGA professionals from Northern Michigan area golf courses in a fun 54-hole Ryder Cup style format. The local charities benefiting include Manna Food Project and First Tee Northern Michigan.

“It is always exciting to win the cup, but even more so, to see the quality of golf that both teams and all these players bring for this event,” said Team BOYNE Captain, Steve Niezgoda, PGA Head Professional at Bay Harbor Golf Club. “They are all close friends, but they are also very competitive, and this event always brings out the best in all of them. Combine that with a season long goal of raising money for charity, and you have something special to look forward to every fall.”

This year’s event was very competitive with Team BOYNE leading 7.5 to 4.5 after the first day with 36 holes of team play – including a four-ball (Best-Ball) session in the morning and foursomes (Alternate Shot) session in the afternoon.

The morning best ball session was very close with Team BOYNE winning 3 of the matches easily including the teams of Scott Pussehl/Brandon Brown winning 6 & 5 and Zach Zondlo/Indiana Jones winning 5 & 4. The two Team Harbor wins were very close as the teams of Kyle Roman/Jason George along with Harry Dixon/Corey Crowell both won their matches 1-up. Team BOYNE came out strong in the afternoon with a decisive 4-2 victory in the alternate shot format headlined by a couple of exciting 1-up wins by the teams of Zach Zondlo/John Myers and Steve Niezgoda/Indiana Jones, which created some separation going into the Tuesday singles matches.

On the final day, which included 12 singles matches, Team Harbor came out strong with Harry Dixon, Shaun Bazilla, and Kyle Roman winning early matches that brought their team right back in the hunt, but Team BOYNE held on with strong play down the stretch by Jeff Roth, Casey Powers, and Indiana Jones. Team Harbor won the day 6.5 to 5.5 but fell just short in winning the Harbor Cup outright.

“Every year we know how competitive this event is and this year was no different,” said Josh Richter, Senior Vice President of Golf Operations. “For a while in the singles, Team Harbor was playing very strong, and the Cup could have gone either way. It was exciting to hold on and win, but also to be able to participate in such a great event that does so much for charity in our area.”
